Africa: Rethinking Plastics to Unlock Industrial Potential

Africa is turning plastics policy into a driver of industrial growth, innovation, and sustainability. By promoting alternatives and circular economy solutions, the continent is reshaping trade, production, and consumption.

Highlights from the Continent

Ghana: Plastic Policy as an Industrial Catalyst

  • Five-year plan to reduce plastic packaging and boost sustainable alternatives.
  • Targets high-plastic sectors like mulch films, sachet water packaging, and carrier bags.
  • Aligned with Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) rules and broader industrial strategy.

“This is a development strategy, not a waste strategy,” says Ebenezer Laryea, SMEP Project Director.

 East Africa: Green Industrialization

  • Draft EAC bill to phase out harmful single-use plastics across 9 countries.
  • Promotes sustainable materials, EPR rules, and formalization of informal workers.
  • Aims to harmonize regulations and enable cross-border trade in alternatives.

“Plastic controls must be paired with business-enabling measures, supportive policies, sustainable finance, and skills development,” notes Abraham Korir Sing’Oei, Kenya Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs.

Africa’s approach positions the continent as a hub for innovation in the circular bioeconomy, creating opportunities for businesses, investors, and innovators.
